2019 Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes One of the best producers coming from the Beaujolais region of Burgundy, is Daniel Bouland. He makes wine that can age up to 20 years, yet this 2019 vintage is already showing beautifully. Coming from the Corcelette site in Morgon, the vines are from 60 to 75 years old. The granite and schist soils lend great characteristics aside from the ripe raspberries and fresh baked cherry pie. Notes of orange blossom and fresh cut flowers lend way to a soft velvety finish, fine tannin leaving you salivating for more on the finish. A n elegant wine that is very easy to drink, yet seriously made and unfilter ed. This wine is a great pairing for savory dishes like stuffed mushrooms, mashed potatoes and roasted chicken. Sipping this with a charcuterie board, pate or even smoked cheese really highlights the fruit in this wine and is the perfect compliment.

Bodegas Bhilar Garnacha ‘Phinca El Vedao’ Edición Limitada 2016

Rioja, Spain | Red wine

Bodegas Bhilar is situated in the town of Elviliar in Rioja Alavesa, and the proprietor and winemaker is 4th generation grower David Sampedro Gil along with his American wife, Melanie Hickman. The two convey a great passion for organic viticulture and biodynamic principles; though they aren’t certified, one can see from the very aromatics that abound in each wine. One gets organic garden herbs like lavender, rosemary, and thyme along with terrific varietal aromatics. Each wine goes under the designate of ‘Phinca’, to pay tribute to the ancient Greek influence on Spanish viticulture. Phinca El Vedao comes from three plots from the vineyards adjacent to their home vineyard of Abejera; though planted exclusively to Garnacha, there are stray Abillo vines that are used here! The 2016 vintage was matured in 400 and 500 liter oak barrels, of 1 - 2 years in age, for nearly 30 months, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. The nose is so expressive, boasting sage, fresh spices, rose petals, and red berries with a hint of winter plum and licorice. This is fresh and medium -bodied with fine tannins, almost chalky mineral notes and buoyant acidity to balance the vivid cherry and raspberry notes. The finish is long and boasts a balsamic edge along with dark cherry hints. This is a wine that calls for rustic fare; roasted vegetables in a peppery sauced, braised pork shoulder, barbecue lamb chips, or a traditional paella de Valencia (NOT paella de Marsico) would work super bly as a pairing, as would a simple Rioja lunch like patatas bravas with chorizo (or jamón Iberico!) topped with a fried egg.

2019 Pax Mahle Wines Syrah North Coast

North Coast, California | Red wine

Master Sommelier Pax Mahle has moved from strength to strength over the course of the past three decades. Beginning his career as a table busser at Fahey & Fromagerie on Nantucket Island, he accompanied Michael Fahey and his clientele about the Northern Rhône before founding Pax Wines with wife Pamela in 2000. His savoir-fare has lifted his reputation and he is well-regarded for producing focused Syrah from cool-climate sites around the North Coast of California. Winemaking is done holistically; Pax only uses grapes grown without the use of chemicals and hand-crafting the wines with as little intervention as possible. The proprietary North Coast Syrah is produced from 100% whole cluster Syrah from three single vineyards (Griffins Lair, Castelli-Knight Ranch and Vine Hill), foot-crushed and fermented using only native yeasts. The new 2019 vintage was aged 10 months in neutral French oak puncheons and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

At 12.5% alcohol, this isn’t your archetypical overblown California Syrah; rather, one gathers from the nose those herbs de Provence, garrigue, pepper and mint with hints of black licorice and sweet spices that are redolent of Hermitage. The tertiary candied violet notes on the nose carry into the medium-bodied palate, showing off lithe underlying acidity with smooth tannins that gain weight with aeration. The small berry, grilled meat and earthy flavors on the entry become sweeter and juicier with time in the glass, and the finish is spicy and plum-driven with a sweeping Syrah heat note. This is your perfect lamb stew wine but feel free to match it with roast poultry dishes of any kind, flank steak, or even heavier pasta dishes (with red sauce).
