HONG KONG – November 9, 2020 – Over 250 people attended Acker’s two-day November 5th and 7th auction in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing as collectors clamored for the world’s finest and rarest wines this past weekend. Wines from the Collection of the Golden Phoenix accounted for the entire Saturday session and achieved HK$50M/US$6.4M of the overall total of HK$71M/US$9.25M in sales. 171 New World Records were achieved, dominated by the wines of Lalou Bize-Leroy, thanks to the spectacular offering of her wines from the collection of the Golden Phoenix and its impeccable provenance.

While the two recent sales in New York have seen Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Comte Liger-Belair battle it out for the spot atop the leader board, this time around saw the wines of Madame Leroy take up the mantle. The Top Lot of the sale, however, was still taken by DRC and six bottles of 1980 Romanee Conti, which sold for HK$843,200/US$108,800. This was followed swiftly by a tie for second place, as six bottles of 1982 DRC Romanee Conti and a rare Scotch lot of one bottle of Macallan Lalique Genesis Decanter 72 Year Old each realized HK$744,000/US$96,000. The fourth spot was captured by a twelve bottle, original wooden case of 1996 d’Auvenay (Leroy) Chevalier Montrachet at HK$545,600/US$70,400, while fifth place was a four-way tie between more of Madame Leroy’s spectacular wines, as twelve bottles each of 1997 Domaine Leroy Richebourg, 2001 Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant in OWC, 1997 d’Auvenay (Leroy) Chevalier Montrachet in OWC, and 1998 d’Auvenay (Leroy) Chevalier Montrachet in OWC each sold for an impressive HK$496,000/US$64,000. A single lot of Bordeaux snuck into the Top Ten, as one Imperial of 2000 Chateau Petrus in OWC claimed the ninth spot at HK$446,400/US$57,600. The tenth position was another tie, as a world record-setting three magnums of 2015 DRC La Tache in OWC, twelve bottles of both 1996 and 1997 d’Auvenay (Leroy) Mazis Chambertin in OWC all sold for HK$421,600/US$54,400 respectively.

The multiple properties of Lalou Bize-Leroy captured an astonishing 36 New World Records total in this stunning sale, with Domaine d’Auvenay capturing six records, with the aforementioned 1997 Chevalier Montrachet and Mazis Chambertin each setting New World Records along with multiple vintages of Meursault Les Narvaux. Domaine Leroy achieved 29 New World Records, headlined by six bottles of 1996 Richebourg selling at HK$347,200/US$44,800 and also multiple vintages of Chambolle Fremieres and Charmes, Clos de la Roche, Gevrey Combottes, Nuits St. Georges Boudots and Vosne Romanee Les Beauxmonts achieving World Records amongst others. Maison Leroy also inked one line in the record books as two bottles of 1985 Musigny realized HK$64,480/US$8,320. Other notable producers to take up significant space in the World Record books include Maison Louis Jadot, with 19 new records, Domaine Dugat-Py with 15, and nine for the rare Bordeaux, Chateau Le Pin.

This week Americans spoke out about their leadership for the next four years, and Hong Kong and China also had something to say: they want their fine and rare wine more than ever,” declared Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “This was an incredible sale headlined by the incomparable cellar of the Golden Phoenix, and wine lovers lusted over the perfect provenance of the wines, and I cannot blame them. With almost every wine purchased on release and stored professionally ever since, it was a cellar that dreams are made of. We could not ask for a better start to our epic November, and speaking of dreams coming true, our next sale will be a spectacular, single cellar sale featuring “The Holy Grail of Burgundy” on November 19th and 20th, a 700-lot opus to world’s most in-demand region, where we expect sales to exceed $10 million. Those nights can’t come soon enough!”

The auction season continues for Acker with The Holy Grail of Burgundy “live online” in New York on November 19th and 20th. This will be followed by another two-day sale in New York on December 3rd and 4th and an auction in Hong Kong on December 12th. Acker is currently accepting wines for its 2021 “live online” auctions, with weekly web auctions closing every week. For more information, email
